Unofficial tally: Simpson squeaks by Snowe-Mello
Unofficial tally: Simpson squeaks by Snowe-Mello

Democrat Deborah Simpson of Auburn appears to have defeated Republican incumbent Lois Snowe-Mello by about 100 votes for the Senate District 15 seat, according to unofficial town reports, both candidates said.

Simpson beat Snowe-Mello by 1,200 votes in Auburn, but her lead was mitigated by Snowe-Mello's strong showing in Durham, Poland and New Gloucester.

"I was expecting a squeaker and, frankly, I wasn't terribly optimistic," Simpson said early Wednesday morning. "As of now, I'm in celebration mode."

Snowe-Mello was seeking her third term in Maine's Senate and Simpson just completed her fourth term in the Maine House.

Snowe-Mello said she was surprised by the outcome.

"I was shocked," she said. "I think all the new registered voters made the difference. I think they voted Democrat."

Snowe-Mello said she was not conceding the race and was requesting a recount of the votes due to the apparent narrow margin of victory for her opponent.

Gary Bain, 64, an Auburn voter, said he cast his ballot for Snowe-Mello because she is a Republican.

"I know very little about Snowe-Mello, other than what I read in the paper," Bain said.

Other Auburn voters said they supported Simpson because they knew of her personally.

"I used to live across the street from Deborah," said Tracy Audet, 44, of Auburn. "She's a wonderful person.

I am shocked Lois Snowe-Mello may have lost to Simpson. Lois is a smart and dedicated state senator. To dis Lois is ridiculous.

Simpson certainly doesn't have the peoples confidence. I believe she represented us terribly in the house

I got to know Deb quite well during the campaign. She's highly intelligent and personable and will make an excellent state senator.

Bonj the election has almost 20,000 votes cast for that race which means the margin ov victory was 50.25% to 49.75% - less than half of one percent - I can understand why she migt want a recount to verify. Challenges have been made for far greater differentials. Allow the process to work for once.

This is a huge win for Dirigo. This is also a big loss for competitive Health ins.

And doesn't the headline say "unofficial results?". Scott, you are correct, lets make sure we keep on Augusta to rid ourselves of Dirigo.

I can't believe we shoot down the Beverage Tax by more than 2 to 1, but send people to Augusta that can't say no to spending. We need folks in Augusta that say it like it is and stand up for their constituents. Saying yes to every spending increase is not what I see as helping us. I hope this isn't official!

Norman, How do you figure that moving from the House of Representatives because of term limits to the Senate is a change?
