Maine voters bellied to the ballot box and flexed their veto muscles over new taxes on beer, wine and soda imposed months ago by the state Legislature as a way to prop up the state-subsidized DirigoHealth insurance program.

With 16 percent reporting as of press time, about 61 percent of Maine voters called for repealing the tax compared to 39 percent who favored letting it stand.

"I really think the people of Maine are speaking up and they said this is not a fair tax," said Mike Barriault, operations manager of Central Distributors Inc. "The tax was snuck in at the last moment and without public input."

The family-owned Lewiston-based wholesale distributor supported the effort to repeal the tax. While he understood the need to fix what many consider a broken state insurance program, Barriault said he and other Question 1 supporters felt that state lawmakers should have held more public hearings on the issue.

"I don't think it's fair to raise our taxes in this current economic climate," said Ed Stebbins, owner of Gritty McDuff's Brew Pub in Auburn. "To raise our taxes without consulting with us first is irresponsible. There's a right way of doing it and there's a wrong way - and they went about it the wrong way."

Many who voted to repeal the tax did so based on concerns that the state wouldn't stop at beer, wine and soda. Kevin Hunter, 26, of Auburn, was one who wondered whether the state would eventually look at future taxes on other nondiscretionary items.

But not everyone agreed. Kris and Craig Deveau, 44 and 48 respectively, of Auburn, countered that supporters of Question 1 made it look as if the state was looking to tax milk and bread.

The couple was among the minority of voters who supported letting the tax stand.

"I strongly believe in the Dirigo plan and I really hope that they'll find another way to fund it," said Paul Spencer, 57, of Auburn. "I think it's something that we really, truly need to have, but I just don't think that's the way to fund it."

I dont see what was so bad about paying an extra 2-3 pennies a drink so kids had access to healthcare. I dont think people understood what they were voting for.

We voted to keep our insurance payments from getting taxed. We voted to stop funding on a failed and closed program.

I find it ironic that Maine voters opted to elect a socialist President and at the same time, opted to dispense with a tax that was for a failed socialist program.

I agree with above. We knew exactly what we were voting for. I will not continue to support the states pet project when it comes to a failed Dirigo plan. Someone post the number the State pays per individual on the plan.

According to Obama's website he is going to make health insurance affordable and accessible to all. Guess we don't need the Dirigo Health plan anymore, right? Let's hope he delivers on his promises.

Well said, JC. Bottom line - you think things were bad before? You ain't seen nothing yet!! Don't just cling to your guns. Keep 'em clean and ready; keep your aim true. We're about to have Biden's premonition come to fruition on a scale unimaginable. This election confirms the need for all citizens to pass the same citizenship test any immigrant would have to take to be naturalized. I heard comments that some people voted for Obama simply because his grandmother died. That is irresponsible and dangerous voting technique. But, it's also a sign of the times.

I think that the people of this state understood exactly what they were voting on. They were voting against funding a program with tax dollars. Gov. Baldacci had stated that Dirigo would not need tax dollars to succeed. The people of Maine voted down a socialist program. Their collective voice questions the reason why the employed should have to fund their own health insurance as well as the insurance of others who are not employed.

I for one totally agree with Ed Stebbins comment. They tried to pull a fast one on us, Isn't there something in the US Constitution about taxation without representation? I believe if they weren't trying to sneak it by the people, they might have had a better chance. Just the Gov's way of bailing out his failed Dirigo plan. And look where it got them.

Jamie, even more ironic, we let the same Dems and more back into Augusta, so our vote on this issue means absolutely nothing. I'll bet they will go into special session and approve a payout to Dirigo to keep it afloat...watch and pay close attention, this issue is not over. We cancelled and unfair tax but reelected most of those creating it in the first place, tlak about dumb. Who's laughing now?

Bonj, is that statement what I would term "self-reporting"? Unstable describes you perfectly,

IN fact Bonj is so unstable I see that many of his posts seem to be deleted by the LSJ as offensive, harmful and incorrect.

You all see how Obamas health plan will work. Tax increases one or two pennies at a time. By the way children will not be refused health care because this was shot down. Parents will have to suck it up and PAY.

Children in this country are already covered under the SCHIP(sp?) program. All children have access to healthcare already. These pennies add up quickly and soon it will be dollars adding up quickly under Obama.

Of the 9,000 originally signing up for Dirigo its afact that 7,000 of them already had insurance but Dirigo gave them a cheaper offer. Simply put, each of us was in fact paying for the insurance for those 9,000. Now I don't blame them for swapping but I do blame the state for trying socialist medicine in a small rural state and not having the numbers to support the program. Only those sick and unhealthy wanted to join, so the cost of care went through the roof. This program must end now! We need a petition to end it!

Simply put, DIRIGO is a failure and so is the Governor. In Maine we like to support loosers for some reason.

Those two or three cents should come from cigarettes. There are so many people who smoke and say they can't afford health care and go on Maine Care and we end up paying for them. I'm tired of paying for those who won't help themselves. If they can't afford health care they should go through a screening process that involves nicotine testing to assess how much insurance they can get. That's how it works in the real world for those who work.

Hi all... "Republican Voter" here. I used to log in as "Independent Voter." My comment on this issue is my amazement that the voters in Maine cannot "connect the dots." They clobber the beverage tax 60 to 40 and then they vote the same people who came up with the tax BACK to Augusta. Makes no sense to me. So we sent Rotundo, Craven, Wagner, Simpson et al back up to screw us again. ROFLMAO.
