Lewiston-Auburn voters weigh in on Election 2008
Sun Journal reporter Scott Taylor visited polling places in Lewiston and Auburn today to get a sample of what voters were saying on who and what they voted for and why. Here's what folks were saying.
Wednesday, November 5 at 5:00 am
Gary Bain, 64, 749 Court St., Auburn
Voted for McCain: “McCain has a little bit more experience, and even though the economy is a little bit in a flux, I don’t think this is the time to unravel it all, either.”
Voted for Collins: “She’s just the favorite. I’ve voted for her for years and I’ve always thought she’s doing the right thing. She’s not totally conservative nor is she extremely liberal.”
Voted for Snowe-Mello: “That was probably more the Republican bent than anything. I know very little about Snowe-Mello, other than what I read in the paper.”
Voted to reject the drink tax: “I don’t think we need another tax. It just goes into the general fund and never gets spent on what it was intended for.”
Voted in support of an Oxford casino: “If this is going to be a tourist economy, we might as well have everything that attracts tourists here.”
Tracy Audet, 44, Heath Lane, Auburn
Voted for Obama: “I have been against the war. I am strong supporter of bringing (the troops) back home and really change where we’ve been going with the government and all of the challenges we have around heating — fuel, our dependence on foriegn oil, all of that. I think he is the person that can really make those changes.”
Voted for Collins: “That was probably the toughest one for me. I thought that she would be a good balance in terms of her experience and what’s going on overseas and her support for Maine.”
Voted for Simpson: “I used to live across the street from Deborah and I know her. She’s a wonderful person.”
Voted in support of the drink tax.
Voted for casino: “There is not a lot in that area and it would bring more tourist attractions to that area and it would connect them with the ski lodges. I thought it would be good additon.”
Gwen Alimondi, 34, 52 Summer St., Auburn
Voted for Obama: “I think he’s going to be a good president, and there needs to be a change. I think he’s a strong person that will do better than our last president.”
Voted for Collins: “I think she’s done a good job this past term and I think we should give her another chance.”
Voted for Simpson: “I have just heard a lot about that person.”
Voted to reject the drink tax. “There are a lot of taxes, already. Too many taxes. I think we need to lower our taxes in Maine.”
Voted for casino: “I think it would bring a lot of jobs to Maine, and a lot of tourists here.”
Jonathan Turgeon, 25, Manley Road, Auburn
Skipped every candidate on the ballot, except the vote for president, and skipped the vote on the beverage tax. “I didn’t know too much about any of them. I really couldn’t see the point of voting just to vote.”
Voted for McCain: “It was a vote against Obama. I didn’t like the fact that he supports abortion. That was the biggest thing.”
Voted against the casino: “I know that when you start to have gambling, people start to get addicted. I don’t think that’s what we need.”
Paul Spencer, 57, 1065 Riverside Dr., Auburn
Voted for McCain: “I think he stands for what I believe in. I think he’s more bipartisan. I think he has the experience, which is what we’re looking for at a time when we have as many problems as we’re every going to have.”
Voted for Collins: “I think she’s done a heck of a job.”
Voted for Simpson: “From what I’ve heard her talk about, I think she’s in tune. I think it’s just time for somebody like her to give this thing a shot.”
Voted to reject the drink tax. “I strongly believe in the Dirigo plan and I really hope that they’ll find another way to fund it. I think it’s something that we really truly need to have, I just don’t think that’s the way to fund it.”{
Voted for casino: “I think we need something to help the Oxford area. I’ve been to Foxwoods a few times, I’ve been to Las Vegas. I don’t see the problems they see happening. I see progress, and good progress. I think it’s about time it comes to Maine.” |

I voted against the casino. Most of those jobs will be minimum wage. That is how it is in Foxwoods and Mohecan Sun. Only the owners are making money.

Jobs are jobs and if it can help support a family in SOME way, then it's helpful. Not everyone is qualified for the jobs that pay more. The more jobs available in a range where people can actually attain them...the better!!

I'm sad to watch the election results point towards a YES vote on 1. The point that wasn't drilled hard enough was that this tax would fund a very needed health program and only tax products that are bad for our health. There is such a thing as a GOOD tax and I'm afraid many people don't realize that.
Right now it's 50:50 on the casino. Jobs are jobs? No. Crappy jobs keep people low. It's not a starting point. We shouldn't throw the people of Oxford county a dead end and especially a dead end that is founded on immorality.
It's also looking like question 3 will get a YES vote. This is a BOND issue.... BONDS mean more debt for our state. We've already learned that our state isn't very good at handling it's budget... now we expect them to handle a debt? Lame.

Jonathan Turgeon, 25, of Manley Road, Auburn......Are you going to ever have to decide if you have an abortion? Or, you just want to take that right away from a woman making that decision for herself?

instead of trying to create jobs that bring along with it addiction and controversy why don't they create real jobs with real paychecks that can support families that's why I voted against the casino
